Chinese Short Dramas: Where to Watch in English

The format was invented in China, and China still makes most of it. But the series you find in English apps are usually not the Chinese originals, and the biggest Chinese hits have no official English version at all. Here is how to tell what you are watching, and where the real thing is.

Disclosure: we make DramaSip, a short drama app that competes with every app named below. Nothing here is sponsored, and we earn nothing whichever app you pick.

The short version

If you want Chinese short dramas in English, you have three different things to choose from, and the apps rarely tell you which one you are getting:

  1. Subtitled originals. The Chinese series, Chinese cast, with English subtitles. This is the real thing, and it is the smallest slice of what English apps carry.
  2. Dubbed originals. The same Chinese series with an English voice track, increasingly generated by AI. You can usually tell from the mouth movements.
  3. Localized remakes. A Chinese script re-shot in Los Angeles with an American cast. This is most of what ReelShort, and a large part of every other app, actually is.

For the first two, start with DramaBox, DramaWave or FlickReels. For the biggest Chinese hits, the honest answer is that most of them are not officially available in English anywhere.

Why most "Chinese short dramas" in English apps are not Chinese

The English-language apps are, almost without exception, run by Chinese companies, and they began by doing the obvious thing: translating the Chinese hits. It mostly did not work.

ReelShort is the clearest case. It launched with translated Chinese series, found the results underwhelming, and in 2023 switched to shooting local productions. Its first big overseas hit after the switch, The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband, came out that June. The scripts still often come from Chinese web novels and Chinese writers' rooms. What changes is the cast, the setting, and anything that does not travel: a poisoning plot becomes a food-allergy plot, and the "live-in son-in-law" premise (赘婿) that powers a whole genre in China is quietly dropped.

So a series can be Chinese in every sense except the one you can see. If you specifically want the Chinese originals, the cast and setting are the only reliable signals — the app's genre labels will not help.

ReelShortLocalized productions since 2023Rarely
iQ (iQIYI International)Long-form C-dramas plus a growing short slate, subtitled in 13 languagesSome, but English subtitles vary by title

Two names you will see mentioned that you cannot use:

  • Hongguo (红果短剧), ByteDance's free, ad-supported short drama app, is where most of China's current hits premiere. It had more than 300 million monthly users by early 2026 and has no English version.
  • Douyin is China's TikTok, and a separate app from TikTok. Series released there stay there.

ByteDance's own overseas apps take a different route: Melolo targets Southeast Asia, and PineDrama makes local productions with local casts rather than subtitling Chinese ones.

A word about YouTube

Search for any Chinese short drama and you will find "full episodes, English sub" uploads on YouTube and Dailymotion. Some are official promotional cuts. Many are not — piracy is a documented, industry-wide problem in this category — and we could not verify any channel posting Chinese duanju in full with English subtitles under licence. If a channel has hundreds of complete series from dozens of different studios, it is almost certainly not licensed to show them.

China's biggest hits — and why you probably can't watch them

These are among the most-watched short dramas in China over the last three years. View counts are reported by the platforms and producers themselves.

SeriesYearWhy it matters
我在八零年代当后妈 — I Became a Stepmother in the 1980s2024The breakout of the 2024 Spring Festival season. A student time-travels into a farming family's 1980s. Douyin hashtags passed a billion views.
闪婚老伴是豪门 — roughly My Flash-Married Partner Is Rich2024The hit that proved the "silver-haired" romance: a domineering-CEO story starring older leads. About 500 million plays in two weeks.
家里家外 — roughly Inside and Outside the Home2025A Sichuan-dialect family drama set in the early 1980s. Seasons one and two have passed 7 billion views combined.
好一个乖乖女 — roughly What a Good Girl2025Hongguo's second most-watched series of 2025, since remade as a horizontal series for Tencent Video.
十八岁太奶奶驾到 — roughly My 18-Year-Old Great-Grandma Is Here2025–26A four-part franchise; the first three parts passed 7 billion plays.
盛夏芬德拉2025Hongguo's top series of 2025 at about 4.4 billion plays, and winner of the Magnolia Award for micro-drama at the Shanghai TV Festival.

English titles in italics are our translations except the first, which is how English-language press rendered it. None of these had an official English release we could verify as of October 2026. That is the norm, not the exception: Hongguo's model is free-with-ads inside China, and the companies exporting to English-speaking markets have found remakes earn more than translations.

If a series on this list turns up in an English app, it will most likely be renamed — which is another reason the Chinese title is worth knowing.

If you meant horizontal Chinese "mini dramas"

Some people searching "Chinese mini drama" want something else entirely: conventional, horizontal C-dramas with 10 to 20 minute episodes. MyDramaList separates the two — micro dramas run one to two minutes, mini dramas ten to twenty.

The mini-drama end is a better bet for official English subtitles, because those series stream on the same services as full-length C-dramas. Titles its community regularly recommends include Provoke (招惹, 2023), a 1930s Shanghai revenge story in 25 episodes of about 15 minutes, Definitely Not Today and A Familiar Stranger. Check MyDramaList for where each one currently streams in your country; availability changes too often for us to list it reliably.

The tropes you'll meet

Chinese short dramas run on a recognisable set of premises. These are the ones worth knowing, with the names Chinese fans use:

  • 霸总 (bàzǒng), the domineering CEO. The cold, impossibly rich male lead. So dominant that China's regulator moved to curb it in late 2024.
  • 战神 (zhànshén), the war god, and 赘婿 (zhuìxù), the live-in son-in-law. Male-audience power fantasies: a humiliated man is secretly the most powerful person in the room. The reveal is the whole point.
  • 穿越 (chuānyuè), time travel or transmigration. Usually waking up inside a past era or a novel. The engine of I Became a Stepmother in the 1980s.
  • 重生 (chóngshēng), rebirth. Dying, waking up years earlier, and doing it right this time — usually as revenge.
  • 年代 (niándài), the era drama. Period settings, most often the 1980s, and lately the most prestigious corner of the format.
  • 银发 (yínfà), silver-haired romance. Love stories with leads over sixty, a genre that barely existed before 2024.

If those sound familiar from English apps, they should. The tropes the remakes use are largely these, translated.

What duanju is, and how big it got

Duanju (短剧) means "short play" — the original Chinese name for what English apps call short dramas, microdramas or vertical dramas. The regulator's term is 微短剧, "micro short drama".

The scale is hard to overstate. China's short drama market reached about 50.4 billion yuan in 2024, the first year it overtook the country's film box office. Viewers numbered around 700 million by mid-2025. Output has since exploded with AI: about 430,000 titles were released in the first eight months of 2026 — more than thirteen times the whole of 2025 — and more than 90% of them were AI-generated.

Regulation has grown alongside it. The National Radio and Television Administration curbed domineering-CEO storylines in late 2024, launched a "micro-short drama plus" plan in 2025 steering production toward travel, law, science and heritage themes, and ran a two-month crackdown on "lowbrow" and pirated content in mid-2026. The direction of travel is toward fewer, more polished series — which is why a short drama winning a Magnolia Award, alongside prestige television, was treated as news.

Common questions

What is a Chinese short drama?
A Chinese short drama, or duanju (短剧), is a scripted series shot vertically for phones, released as 60 to 100 episodes of one to three minutes each. China developed the format between roughly 2020 and 2022, and its domestic market passed the country's film box office in 2024.
What does duanju mean?
Duanju (短剧) is Chinese for 'short play'. It is the original name for the format English-language apps call short dramas, microdramas or vertical dramas. The fuller term in Chinese regulation is 微短剧, 'micro short drama'.
Where can I watch Chinese short dramas with English subtitles?
DramaBox, DramaWave and FlickReels all carry translated Chinese originals alongside their Western-made series. The catalogues mix both, so check each series' cast and setting. China's biggest domestic hits, mostly on Hongguo and Douyin, generally have no official English release.
Are ReelShort dramas Chinese?
Mostly not in the sense people mean. ReelShort tried translating Chinese short dramas, found they underperformed, and switched in 2023 to shooting localized productions with American casts — often adapted from Chinese web novels or scripts, with Chinese producers behind them.
What is the most popular Chinese short drama?
By reported views, recent leaders include 盛夏芬德拉, Hongguo's top series of 2025 with about 4.4 billion plays, which went on to win the Magnolia Award for micro-drama at the 2026 Shanghai TV Festival, and the 十八岁太奶奶驾到 franchise, whose first three parts passed 7 billion plays. Neither has an official English release we could find.
